The undifferenced arms were granted by the Lord Lyon King of Arms on 30th May 1988 (volume 71, folio 69) in memory of my great-great-grandfather Duncan Nicholson, a farmer from the Hebrides. The hawks' heads erased Gules reflect the arms of the Chief of Clan MacNeacail and the red bordure signifies that I am descended of the fourth surviving son of Duncan. I was recognized by the Lord Lyon as the Baron of Balvenie in the County of Banffshire and matriculated the feudo-baronial additaments on 25th September 1995. I am also the holder of the ancient Castle of Balvenie (13th century) in Dufftown, Banffshire.

I was Chairman of Coca-Cola Europe until 1973, having served in managerial positions in that company and its affiliates since 1937. I am currently Chairman of The Highland Clan MacNeacail Federation and former High Commissioner for The Americas; also Trustee of The Clan MacNeacail Trust; Chairman of The Symposium and (to 2002) of the Advisory Board of the Emory University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences; Honorary President of Dufftown Highland Games; Patron of Dufftown Horticultural Society; Founder-Member of Museum of Scotland (Edinburgh); Advisory Board Atlanta International School; served on Georgia Indigent Defense Council (1988-98); Long-time Board Member of Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the High Museum of Arts, Atlanta.

I have been generously decorated whilst in Europe. The decorations are: Chevalier, Order of the Crown, Belgium; Officer Order of Leopold II, Belgium, and Commendatore, Order of Merit, Italy
