Green
Dr Christopher Denis Green B.Sc., Ph.D. (St And)

Arms: Per pale Vert and Azure, a fleur de lis Or issuant from a crescent Argent, on a chief engrailed Or two open books proper, fore-edges and bindings Vert.

Crest: An helm-fan proper charged as the Arms.

Motto: ESPEREZ TOUJOURS

Matriculated: Court of the Lord Lyon 6th March 1963. Lyon Register, volume 46, folio 149.

My father, the late Frederick C Green, M.A. (St And), D.Phil. (K`ln), D.Univ.(Paris), D.(h.c.) Rennes and Grenoble, holder of the Military Cross, Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur, Officier de la Couronne de Belge, was granted arms by the Lord Lyon Innes of Learney in 1961 in memory of his great-great-grandfather Robert Green, general carter in Aberdeen (Lyon Register, volume 41, folio 64). These included the colourful pun on the name together with the fleur-de-lis on azure for the French connection. The books relate to his profession (Professor of French successively at the Universities of Toronto, Cambridge and Edinburgh), while the crescent denotes descent from families of Simpson and Mair in Aberdeen and neighbourhood. The motto is a linguistic pun, green being the colour of hope.

My father's grant had no crest so the helm-fan (which is possibly unique in contemporary Scots heraldry) charged with the arms was a later addition. It follows that subsequent differences (such as the engrailed chief) are replicated in the crests of cadets. The paternal arms passed to my older brother James A Green, B.Sc. (St And), Ph.D.(Cantab), FRSE, FRS, formerly Professor of Mathematics at the University of Warwick. I matriculated as second son in 1963 with the chief engrailed for brotherly difference, which is reflected in the helm fan crest.
