City of Edinburgh Council

Argent, on a rock proper a castle triple-towered and embattled sable, masoned argent, and topped with three vanes gules, windows and portcullis shut gules

crest - an anchor wreathed about with a cable, all proper

coronet - city council

supporters - dexter, a maid richly attired, with her hair hanging down her shoulders, and, sinister, a doe proper

motto - above the crest, Nisi Dominus Frustra

Public Register - 80/1; 18 July 1996

The bearings, apart from the coronet, are a ‘re-grant’ of the bearings of the pre 1996 City of Edinburgh District Council’s (less the district council coronet) and so a ‘re-re-grant’ of the pre 1975 City of Edinburgh’s (less the helmet and mantling)

(The coats of arms is often emblazoned showing a run of steps going up the rock to the castle port - something that does not appear in any of the blazons going back to the first record in 1774)

community councils with bearings - Currie, Kirkliston, Portobello, Queensferry
