These arms were granted to the first bishop of Mombasa, whose diocese covered the whole of British East Africa, now Kenya. It was discovered too late that the College of Arms had egregiously granted the arms to the bishop personally instead of to him in his official capacity, which necessitated new arms for subsequent bishops.
