Arms: Azure, a ram’s head cabossed Proper armed Or in chief three crosses pattée of the Last.

Crest: A barn owl alighting wings elevated Proper

Motto: Glengarrell

Grant: Court of the Lord Lyon 3 June 2015. 121st folio of the 88th Volume of the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland.

My Arms are the first to be granted to the surname of Bingham in Scotland. The colours Azure and Or are taken from the Bingham Earls of Lucan, as are the cross pattées. The ram’s head is the emblem of the Govan Weavers Society (founded 1756) of which was Deacon from 2014-15. My paternal grandparents met and lived in Govan and my father was born in the burgh. The crest is of my favourite bird, the barn owl, and was often seen by me locally. The motto, which has been transposed and made into one word, is taken from a well known Kilsyth beauty spot, Garrell Glen, from where I have fond memories of playing as a child. The Arms show the shield surmounted on the badge of a Knight of Justice of the Most Venerable Order of St John of which I am the current Director of Ceremonies of the Priory of Scotland.

The design is simple, as I like heraldry to be, employing two tinctures and two charges. I was assisted in the design by the heraldic artist, Anthony Maxwell, whose advice to ‘fill the shield’ has been achieved, and Gordon Casely’s admonition ‘less is more’ was also followed. As the late Dr Patrick Barden wrote, ‘... there is one over-riding principle in heraldic design: arms, and all that goes with them, have the primary purpose of identification’. I believe I have also achieved that maxim.
