Urquhart of Meldrum, William - Armorial Panel 1741
Old Meldrum Town Hall, Aberdeenshire

Situated above the entrance to Old Meldrum town hall are a polychrome armorial plaque of the ' Urquhart of Meldrum Arms' modelled in high relief and bearing the date 1741 in Roman numerals, immediatley below is a datestone also in Roman numerals bearing the date 1877.

These arms differ slightly from those of the present Urquhart of Urguhart by their crest.

If the panel is older than the town house, where was it before?

Perhaps at Meldrum House. Now the Meldrum House Hotel. Good point though. Wonder if it could be John Urquhart or William Urquhart. See lineage in main Description.

The crest appears to be a Meldrum of Meldrum demi-otter which may be holding a Seton of Meldrum crescent improperly painted

It does indeed look like a demmi-otter that should be holding something James. Would that Match up with the initials though WU on the panel.

According to Gayre, these arms match exactly (though as surmised the crescent should be Gules and other aspects of the painting are wrong) those matriculated by "William Urquhart of Meldrum, Esquire in the County of Aberdeen Chief of the ancient name in Scotland Representative of the House of Cromartie" on 30th July 1741 (LR i/223)
