Armorial brooch belonging to Lady Bute
William Burges was an architect and friend of Lord Bute. They collaborated in elaborate and exuberant medieval 'restorations' and fantasies. Burges gave this gold and enamel brooch to Lady Bute in 1873 to her great delight. The central escutcheon has the impaled arms of Lord and Lady Bute, while the separate arms are displayed on the pendant shields. Curiously, the Howard arms of Lady Bute show the bend as Or rather than the correct Argent, and there is no difference for cadency.
