Duncan McAra
Arms: Sable, a Celtic chariot Or, on a chief Argent a book expanded Proper, binding and fore-edges Gules between two chevrons couped grady of the Last.
Crest: a demi pine marten rampant (Martes martes) between two sprigs of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) Proper
Motto: SPEIK MEMORIE (between these two words there should be a raised point - not a full stop.
McAra (as a sept of MacGregor) means 'son of the charioteer'. The book refers to my professional background in book publishing. The chevrons couped resemble crowstep gables - an allusion to my interest in architecture (historic and modern). The MacGregor clan plant is Scots pine, so what more appropriate for a crest than a ferocious pine marten. I believe that I am the first McAra to be granted arms (27th January 1999) as McAra, rather than as McAra-sept-of-MacGregor (as has happened with earlier McAra petitioners).
