The bearings are new to Scottish heraldry (though the burgh of Kilmarnock, now in East Ayrshire, had squirrels for supporters in its bearings), but there are references to the arms of the old district councils of Cumnock and Doon Valley, and Kilmarnock and Loudon, and hence back to the pre 1975 burgh of Kilmarnock, though not to the other old burghs now in East Ayrshire
